Starting Business On The Ruins Of A State Farm : Estonian : Deutch :

Can you imagine a huge state farm of 6.500 ha of land including forests, lakes and roads? And 1.900 heads of cattle and 4.000 pigs? And about 250 human beings attached to it? And all of them living merrily under the bright and never-setting sun of socialism? When fresh winds of independence began to blow in 1992, an agricultural reform was started in Estonia.

It so happened that 8 persons had the crazy idea to privatize the farm and treat the exhausted land and people with the methods our forefathers had already used - the ecological way of cultivating land. It would have been quite impossible without the help of Swedesh Rural Development Group and Dornach Antroposophical High School.

12 years have passed and instead of abandoned stables and uncultivated land (which must have been the aim of the ongoing reform) there still stands a farm! Somewhat smaller - about 1000 ha, 250 dairy-cows and 250 heads of young cattle - all left to the care of 40 workers. This is Saidafarm.

And now, the best soft-cheese in Estonia is produced on SAIDAFARM!

And we are unfortunately not able to meet all the needs! We are also dreaming about making cottage cheese and yogurt. But it is quite impossible for a farmer to get loans to expand his activity. As long as your stable doesn't look as attractive as modern bank-house you are absolutely not reliable. And the product still has to be sold at comparatively low price for the politicians haven't seen the importance of locally produced ecologically organic food. It was sad to look at the village soon after reform started - people gone somewhere else, houses left uncared, no working-places for those who still decided to stay.

Bit by bit life comes back to the village.

And its not working-post only people are looking for - they want to have a kindergarten and school nearby, they long for cultural activities in a local club, e.g. the doors of Ellamaa Club are always open to people who are interested in spending their valuable spare time singing, dancing, acting, making handicraft, or just ask for all kinds of courses to get retrained or to keep up with developing world. And one day its nice to find out that they care a lot about the place they are living in, they study the past of the village, try to save and maintain ancestor's knowledge and experiences. Estonian nation is unthinkable without rural people and Estonian village is the stronghold of our nationality during any hard times. Lets hold it!

THE FOOT THAT FOLLOWS AFTER A PLOUGH ALWAYS KEEPS STRAIGHT!
